Organizational profile: MERSA Media Institute is a nonprofit media policy think tank. We work to help
create vibrant, responsible and independent media, professional unions and education
centers through research, capacity building and institutional support in Africa. We
believe free and independent media are lifelines to the development of peaceful, prosperous and democratic societies in the continent. Our media research and training partnerships are designed to create stable, peaceful
and prosperous nations where diversity of views, identities and interests are respected
and engrained in robust public discourse.

Purpose: MMI has provided training on election reporting to more than 6 media houses in
Addis Ababa and 3 regions. Building up on this, MMI has planned to publish an
election reporting manual with a special angle on conflict. The manual is aimed at
enhancing the knowledge and skills of specific story-telling ability, use of data for
factual reporting, and governance accountability. The manual will be incorporating
local examples and experiences and planned to be used to serve as a model reference
in future elections. The designed manual will be distributed to local media houses and
be made available online for a free download for institutional knowledge retention.

Major duties and responsibilities:

  • The consultant is expected to provide an outline of the ‘Election Reporting’ manual
    and submit to MMI team for feedback
  • The consultant is expected to co-write an election reporting manual with a special focus on conflict-reporting
  • The consultant should submit draft of the manual and incorporate feedback from
    reviewers as well as MMI team
  • The consultant should work in close communication with trainer on election
    reporting and incorporate training topics to manual – The consultant is expected to submit the final version of the curriculum in 20 days

Experience and required qualifications:

  • BA/MA in journalism and communications, communications, media studies and
    related fields
  • The consultant should have an experience in curriculum, module or manual
    development in media development sector
  • High analytic and problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and communication skills in Amharic and English
  • All rounded knowledge of the media landscape in Ethiopia
