Organizational Profile: MERSA Media Institute is a nonprofit media policy think tank. We work to help create vibrant, responsible and independent media institutions, professional unions and education centers through research, capacity building and institutional support in Ethiopia.

Position: Data Scientist/ New Media Specialist

Employment Type: fixed term Contract
Duration of Employment: 2-years
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (20% travel)

Position Summary: The Data Scientist/ New Media specialist will be responsible for supporting MERSA Media Institute and it’s partners’ data journalism, fact checking and media monitoring efforts. The prospector will be working with a cross-functional team from various disciplines and media partners. Specific duties include structuring, architecting, analyzing and visualizing open data in all formats. Coding, curating and localizing open source algorithms to in-house needs, new media skills such as digital publishing, web and graphic design, social media monitoring and analytics are highly desirable skills.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:    

  • Support MERSA Media Institute’s data journalism, fact checking and data journalism labs under the flagship Dagu Media Labs Program.    
  • Map out open data sources, structure data in machine readable formats, build datasets, assist in analysis of patterns and visualization.
  • Build unique digital platforms, codes and algorithms, adapt open source, creative commons codes that support data journalism, fact checking and media monitoring labs to be setup in partner media houses in various locations in Ethiopia.
  • Help journalists use data for their reporting, making sense of numbers and hidden patterns.
  • Digital publishing and management: graphic design, audio-visual content production for web and social media.
  • Social media monitoring and analytics, supporting research efforts
  • Perform any other related task as may be assigned.

 Required Qualifications:      

  • Advanced degree in data science or IT (2-5 years of experience)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and other local languages
  • Leadership core qualifications including team work, creativity, strategic planning

Position: Finance and Project Administrator

Employment Type: fixed term Contract
Duration of Employment: 2-years
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position Summary: The Finance and Project Administrator will be responsible for creating and implementing a financial accounting and control mechanism, budget and disbursement processes for projects in compliance with IPSAS and other requirements for Civil Society Organizations. The Finance and Project Administrator is also responsible for preparing budget justification narratives, disbursement of payments for goods and services in accordance with MERSA Media Institute’s guidelines, project cycle administration and monitoring and evaluation of project spending under the direct supervision of the Executive Director and in collaboration with authorized project staff.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:     

  • Develop and implement a financial management mechanism for MERSA Media Institute in accordance with organizational policy, IPSAS and donor requirements for the specified contract period. Provide continued strategic advice and assist in updating organizational manuals according to IPSAS guidelines.  
  • Process grant transactions according to organizational manuals, regulatory requirements and grant timelines and terms of reference. 
  • Manage project expenses, handle payment requests and disbursement for procurement of goods and services from contractors, handle documentation and settle/reimburse expenses for travel and training related activities. 
  • Deduct all applicable taxes from payments for the procurement of goods and services, comply with all applicable tax codes and file to appropriate authorities in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and review cash flow for projects and submit a report to the Executive Director and other authorized project staff.
  • Assist in annual and project specific budget preparation.
  • Manage petit cash according to organizational manuals, process authorized payments and document receipts.   
  • Document and keep records of all financial transactions, prepare accounting reports in accordance with project timelines and upon request from management. Quickly adapt and implement donor required accounting and reporting requirements and software.   
  • Take a lead in financial management and assist project staff and the Executive Director in project cycle management, events planning and management and other project related activities.
  • Perform any other related task as may be assigned.

 Required Qualifications:      

  • Bachelors Degree in accounting, finance, or business administration (2-5 years of preferably NGO experience)
  • Experience in handling grants for NGOs, IPSAS ready, project management
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and other local languages
  • Leadership core qualifications including team work, planning and organizing

Position: Project Manager

Employment Type: fixed term Contract
Duration of Employment: 1-2 years
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Salary: 15,000

Position Summary: The Project Manager will be responsible for the direction, coordination, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and completion of MERSA Media Institute’s Dagu Media Lab program and other projects, while remaining aligned with strategy, commitments and goals of the organization. The Project Manager will also be responsible for managing budgets and operational plans, including the strategic use of resources under the supervision of the Executive Director.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee project plan and implementation
  • Develop detailed implementation plan and operational strategy in line with the project design and donor requirements
  • Design a plan for resource utilization and take corrective action when necessary
  • Develop and ensure appropriate tools and strategy to monitor progress, quality and impact of the project
  • Create schedule, project timeline and ensure all deliverables are met
  • Develop internal communication strategy and with partners and implement accordingly
  • Ensure that systems are in place to support effective project compliance and positive audit results, and that staff understand this system and follow it accordingly
  • Develop reports and other project documentation as and when required
  • Develop clear, straightforward plans that stimulate employees so that the team can work effectively
  • Assist in proposal writing to bid for new projects
  • Manage project risks and come up with risk mitigation plans
  • Assist in events planning, management and other project related activities.
  • Perform any other related task as may be assigned

 Required Qualifications:      

  • Bachelors Degree in project management, business administration with 5 or more years of experience or a master’s degree in project management, MBA or other related fields with 2–5 years of NGO/private sector experience
  • Proven experience in project management for NGOs or media development related work
  • Stakeholder and team management and communication skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and other local languages
  • Leadership core qualifications including team work, planning and organizing
